Our Occupational Therapists work with families to assist children in learning the functional and independent skills needed to engage daily in their home, school, and community environments. These include self-care (such as dressing, hygiene tasks, using a spoon and fork), school skills (such as handwriting, coloring, cutting), motor and coordination skills, play skills, paying attention, and remaining calm and regulated.

Our Physical Therapists work with families to provide support with a child’s gross motor development and motor planning. This may include improving and working with muscle tone, strength, range of movement, quality of movement, eye-hand coordination, attention to task, and sensory integration. We see children from birth through adolescence with health problems related to injury, disease, or congenital conditions.

Feeding therapists evaluate how children chew and swallow food to maintain a healthy, age-appropriate diet. A feeding evaluation will help distinguish between picky eating and more serious disruptions to a child’s feeding patterns that can impede their growth and development. Children who may benefit from a feeding evaluation include those with a history of:

• • Highly picky or particular eating (tastes, textures, colors, etc.)
  • Limited or restricted diet due to rigid behaviors and preferences
  • Frequent gagging or vomiting during and/or after meals
  • Sensory processing and/or behavioral disorders
  • Digestive disorders and/or surgery
  • Neurological disorders
  • GERD (reflux)
  • Poor or slow weight gain
  • Oral-motor weakness or incoordination
  • Oral/facial anomalies, such as cleft lip or palate

A feeding evaluation will examine your child’s history and present status to determine the best course of treatment based on their physical and behavioral needs. Our team collaborates closely with inter- and trans-disciplinary professionals, including occupational and speech therapies, primary care physicians, ENTs, GI specialists and psychologists. Behavioral Health counseling can help families with communication problems or challenges that impact family relationships and assist parents in how to address challenging or disruptive behaviors in the home or school.

Your child/family may benefit from behavioral/counseling support if you are having difficulty with:

• • Managing a High Level of Daily Stress which is negatively impacting your physical or emotional health.
  • Understanding how your child’s needs impact behavior and how to effectively respond to challenging behavior.
